Why is my business not showing up in Google AI Overviews / AI Mode?
Google's AI Overviews (the AI summary at the top of some results) and AI Mode (its conversational search) both answer questions by pulling from sources Google can reach. If your business never appears, it's usually one of a handful of fixable reasons — plus some you can't control. AI answers change daily; a scan is a snapshot, so treat any single result as a moment in time, not a verdict.
First, the foundation: are you even indexed?
Google's AI features draw on Google's index. If your pages aren't indexed, they can't be summarized. This is the most-missed cause: a site can look perfect on the surface and still be invisible because Google hasn't indexed it — from a broken canonical, a missing sitemap, or a site telling Google not to index it. Confirm you're indexed before worrying about anything AI-specific.
Common reasons you're left out
- Your snippet controls are limiting Google. AI Overviews and AI Mode are Search features: they use Googlebot and respect the same page controls as regular results —
nosnippet,data-nosnippet,max-snippet, andnoindex. If a plugin or a past "privacy" setting addednosnippetor a tinymax-snippet, you've limited what Google can show from your pages in AI features. (Google-Extended is a different switch: it governs Gemini training and grounding in Google's other systems, and Google states it does not affect Search inclusion or ranking.) - Weak local signals. AI Overviews for local queries lean on the same signals as the local pack: a complete Google Business Profile, consistent name/phone/city across the web, and reviews. Thin or inconsistent signals make you easy to skip.
- Content isn't answer-shaped. If no page plainly answers "who does X in [city]," there's nothing clean to lift. Pages built only from images or marketing copy give the model little to quote.
- No clear entity. Without structured data stating who/what/where, Google has to infer your business from scattered text — and may get it wrong or skip it.
What you genuinely can't control
- Overviews are selective. Google doesn't show an AI Overview for every query, and which queries trigger one shifts over time.
- You can't force inclusion. There's no submit-to-be-featured button, and no one can guarantee placement. Anyone who promises it is overpromising.
What to do about it
Work the parts you control, in order: confirm indexing first, then check your snippet and index controls, then tighten your Google Business Profile and NAP consistency, then make at least one page plainly answer the core "who does X in [city]" question with matching structured data. A scan can flag the on-site pieces — indexing signals, robots and meta directives, schema completeness, and whether your content is answer-ready — so you know which of these is actually your gap.
FAQ
- Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from Google Search or AI Overviews?
- Google says Google-Extended does not affect a site's inclusion or ranking in Google Search; it controls Gemini training and grounding in Google's other systems. AI Overviews and AI Mode follow Googlebot and your snippet controls instead.
- I rank in normal Google but not in AI Overviews — why?
- AI Overviews are selective and don't appear for every query, and they weigh answer-ready content and clear entities heavily. Ranking in classic results doesn't guarantee an Overview mention.
- Will fixing my schema get me into AI Overviews?
- It helps Google read you accurately, which improves your odds — but AI answers change daily; a scan is a snapshot, and no change guarantees inclusion.
- What's the single most common cause of being invisible?
- Not being indexed at all. Confirm indexing before anything AI-specific.
